CCL Injuries: The Dog Knee Surgery Solution
One of the most common orthopedic issues in dogs is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury, which is similar to an ACL injury in humans. The CCL, a critical stabilizing ligament, is a fibrous band of tissue located deep within the knee joint. Tearing or rupturing of this ligament causes joint instability, leading to joint swelling and severe pain.
A rupture of the CCL is one of the most common reasons for sudden rear leg lameness in dogs and less commonly in cats. Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) will develop if this instability is not corrected. Common signs and symptoms of a dog CCL injury include decreased activity level, decreased muscle mass of the affected leg, a popping sound (which may indicate a concurrent meniscal tear), swelling, stiffness, and pain in the affected leg.
At Jupiter Veterinary Hospital & Urgent Care, the dog knee surgery performed by Dr. Spranklin is:
- Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO): This procedure alters the angle of the tibia to stabilize the knee without the need for the CCL.
- Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA): Adjusts the position of the tibia to stabilize the joint.
Our veterinary orthopedic surgeon will take excellent care of your pet during their TPLO surgery. Proper treatment of a CCL injury can prevent further joint damage and significantly improve your dog’s (or cat’s) mobility and quality of life.

Orthopedic Surgery FAQs
How do I know if my dog has a torn ACL?
Sudden limping in a rear leg, difficulty bearing weight, stiffness after rest, or decreased activity can indicate a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury. Some dogs may show swelling around the knee or sit with the affected leg extended outward. A veterinary exam and diagnostic imaging are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
How long does it take a pet to recover from orthopedic surgery?
Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure, but most orthopedic surgeries require several weeks or even months of restricted activity and structured rehabilitation. Following post-operative instructions closely is essential to ensure proper healing.
Can my pet live comfortably without orthopedic surgery?
In some mild cases, conservative management such as rest, weight control, and medication may provide temporary relief. However, untreated ligament injuries or joint instability often lead to progressive arthritis and chronic pain. Our veterinarians will only recommend surgery if it truly is the best option.
How much does surgery cost with a board-certified veterinary surgeon in Jupiter?
Costs vary depending on the procedure and your pet’s specific condition. Jupiter Veterinary Hospital & Urgent Care is proud to offer competitive surgical rates in the Jupiter area that cost less than specialty hospitals while maintaining high standards of care. A consultation allows us to provide a personalized estimate and discuss all available options.
