Why Would a Cat or Dog Need Orthopedic Surgery?

Orthopedic surgeries are typically recommended to address injuries or conditions affecting a pet’s bones, joints, or ligaments. Pets may require an orthopedic procedure for reasons including trauma, genetic conditions, or wear and tear over time. Some of the most common reasons pets need orthopedic surgery include:

Early detection and treatment of these conditions can significantly improve your pet’s mobility and overall quality of life. Our veterinary team will work closely with you to determine the best course of action for your pet’s orthopedic health.

CCL Injuries: The Dog Knee Surgery Solution

One of the most common orthopedic issues in dogs is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury, which is similar to an ACL injury in humans. The CCL, a critical stabilizing ligament, is a fibrous band of tissue located deep within the knee joint. Tearing or rupturing of this ligament causes joint instability, leading to joint swelling and severe pain.

A rupture of the CCL is one of the most common reasons for sudden rear leg lameness in dogs and less commonly in cats. Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) will develop if this instability is not corrected. Common signs and symptoms of a dog CCL injury include decreased activity level, decreased muscle mass of the affected leg, a popping sound (which may indicate a concurrent meniscal tear), swelling, stiffness, and pain in the affected leg.

At Jupiter Veterinary Hospital & Urgent Care, the dog knee surgery performed by Dr. Spranklin is:

Our veterinary orthopedic surgeon will take excellent care of your pet during their TPLO surgery. Proper treatment of a CCL injury can prevent further joint damage and significantly improve your dog’s (or cat’s) mobility and quality of life.
